A good retreat is simple, quiet and well organised. This checklist helps you plan one without losing the point.
A retreat is time set apart: a weekend or a few days away from ordinary life, for rest, prayer and reflection. The best ones are simple. This checklist helps you plan one.
Decide the purpose
Is it for quiet and prayer, for a team to plan the year, for couples, or for a whole congregation? The purpose decides the length, the place and the program.
Choose the place
Look for somewhere quiet, with good access, simple rooms and space to walk. Visit it first if you can. Check what is included, and what the rules are for noise, food and cancellations.
Set the dates and the numbers
Allow time to promote the retreat, and set a clear deadline for booking. Decide the maximum number of people the venue can host comfortably.
Plan a gentle program
- Leave long gaps for rest and walking
- Keep talks short, and leave time for silence
- Share meals together, and keep them simple
Look after the practical side
Agree the cost, who is responsible for what, and how people will travel. Think about dietary needs, accessibility and first aid.
Tell people about it
Add your retreat to your church page so people nearby and further away can find it, with the dates, price and how to book.
