Nervous about walking into a church for the first time? Here is what usually happens, from the door to the final song.
If you have never been to a church service, it is normal to feel unsure. What do you wear? Where do you sit? What if you do not know when to stand? The good news is that almost every church expects visitors, and most are glad to see you.
Before you go
Check the service time on the church page, and plan to arrive five or ten minutes early. That gives you time to find a seat and someone to ask if you have a question.
What to wear
Wear something comfortable and tidy. In many churches people dress simply, and in some they dress up. You will not be the only one in the room wearing what you chose.
When you arrive
Someone will usually greet you at the door and may hand you a leaflet or hymn book. Sit anywhere. If a church has a pew that is traditionally taken by a regular, someone will gently tell you, and it is not a sign you are unwelcome.
What happens in the service
A service often includes singing, readings from the Bible, prayers and a talk. In some traditions there is also communion. You are not required to do anything you are not comfortable with. You can sit quietly while others stand or kneel.
After the service
Many churches offer tea or coffee afterwards. It is a good moment to say hello. If you would like to visit again, ask about the midweek groups.
